The Rise of Bowl Food Weddings and Why Guests Love Them

Catering for weddings has changed considerably over the last few years. Though a traditional three course wedding breakfast remains a firm favourite, lots of couples are looking for dining styles that feel relaxed, sociable and that little bit different.

Bowl food fits beautifully into this style of celebration. Instead of sitting down for a formal meal, guests can enjoy a selection of smaller dishes served throughout the day, giving them the opportunity to try different flavours while continuing to mingle and enjoy the day.

At Fork & Field, our bowl food menu has been designed with exactly this in mind. It brings together small servings of some of our most popular dishes, from comforting classics to lighter, fresher flavours, creating a wedding meal that feels generous without being overly formal.

What is bowl food?

Bowl food sits somewhere between canapés and a traditional plated meal. The portions are more substantial than a canapé but smaller than a full main course, allowing several different dishes to be enjoyed.

For couples exploring different types of catering menus, bowl food is a great option when you want the quality and thought that goes into a beautifully prepared wedding breakfast, but prefer a more relaxed service style.

Our Bowl Food wedding menu offers the choice of three, four or five bowls per person, giving couples flexibility over how they want the meal to work within their day.

Instead of bringing everyone to the table for a lengthy, seated meal, bowl food allows the atmosphere to continue naturally, whilst keeping your guests fed and satisfied.

Why are couples choosing a more relaxed wedding breakfast?

There’s no right or wrong way to have your wedding breakfast. Some couples love the traditional three courses, whilst others prefer a more informal style.

Bowl food gives you another option.

When we talk to couples about wedding breakfast catering, we always consider the wider vision they’re looking for on their day. If they’re dreaming of plenty of conversation, movement and a relaxed atmosphere, bowl food can complement that perfectly.

It can work particularly well for weddings where couples want to move smoothly from drinks and canapés into the main celebration without creating a sudden change of pace.

Guests are still treated to thoughtfully prepared dishes and plenty of food, but the experience feels less structured. It’s for this reason that bowl food has become such a popular choice in recent years.

Plenty of flavours to choose from

For couples that consider themselves foodies, one of the biggest benefits of bowl food is undoubtedly the variety. Instead of choosing one main dish for most of your guests, you can introduce several different flavours throughout the meal.

Our own bowl food selection includes plenty of comforting favourites. Pork and apple sausage is served with mustard mash potato, sticky cabbage and gravy, while braised beef comes with horseradish pomme purée, glazed Chantenay carrots and red wine jus.

For something with a little more spice, Chicken Tikka Masala is accompanied by saffron rice and mint raita, while Mexican Chilli Con Carne comes with cheese glaze, rice, nachos and jalapeños.

There are lighter flavours too. Lemon Pepper Salmon is paired with Sayadieh rice and spiced hummus, while Chicken Pintxo Skewers are served with patatas bravas and fresh chives.

This means that your wedding food can take your guests on a journey, rather than sticking to one particular theme or flavour profile.

Creating a menu that feels like your wedding

We have always believed wedding food should reflect the couple at the heart of the celebration.

No two couples are the same, which is why bespoke wedding catering is so important. Choosing your wedding breakfast menu isn’t about just selecting dishes that sound delicious (though that’s important, too!). It’s about thinking about how you’d like your guests to experience the day.

You may want rich, comforting dishes for an autumn or winter celebration. Or perhaps you’re planning a relaxed summer wedding, and want your menu to be full of fresh flavours. Or, you may have a guest list full of food lovers, and want to give them as much variety as possible.

Exploring different types of catering menus gives you the freedom to find a format that suits your wedding rather than feeling tied to tradition.

We work closely with couples to understand the atmosphere they are hoping to create, helping make the food feel like a natural part of the celebration.

A sociable way to dine

Weddings bring together people you love from every part of your life, and the best celebrations give everyone plenty of opportunities to enjoy that.

Our bowl food menu is specifically designed to be served while guests are mingling and socialising.

There is something naturally sociable about everyone trying different dishes and comparing favourites as they arrive. Instead of the meal becoming a pause in the celebration, it actively adds to the atmosphere.

For couples searching for something a bit different in their Cheshire wedding catering, our bowl food menu offers the best of both worlds. Guests can enjoy beautifully prepared food while the celebration continues around them.

It also means you can spend more of your wedding reception moving around and chatting to your loved ones, rather than remaining at your table throughout several courses.

Making sure every guest feels included

Whatever style of wedding breakfast catering you choose, dietary requirements should always be considered carefully.

The variety available with bowl food lends itself well to creating a balanced menu that every guest will love. We offer dishes such as Thai Green Sweet Potato Curry with quinoa, coriander and coconut yoghurt, Teriyaki Aubergine with rice, ginger, lime and radish garnish, and Chickpea Falafel with Mediterranean pearl cous cous, aioli and pomegranate seeds.

There is also a Broccoli and Sage Risotto served with asparagus and crispy kale.

Each of our dishes are handmade by our in-house chefs, allowing them to be adapted to suit dietary requirements. We gather final dietary information ahead of each wedding and event, so you can be assured your guests will be looked after.

And there is still room for dessert

Got a sweet tooth? Bowl food doesn’t mean missing out on dessert…

Our menu includes favourites such as Sticky Toffee Pudding with caramel sauce, White Chocolate, Honey and Pistachio Cheesecake, Mini Lemon Tart with raspberry syrup and dried raspberry flakes, and Gooey Chocolate Brownie.

With options like this, dessert is another part of the experience, giving guests one more dish to look forward to before the evening celebrations begin.

Bowl food as part of your wider wedding menu

Bowl food can also sit alongside other types of catering menus throughout your wedding day.

You might choose to welcome your guests with canapés, before moving into bowl food for the wedding breakfast, followed by artisan sourdough pizzas or street food later in the evening. Or, bowl food can form part of a relaxed reception where the emphasis is on guests moving freely and enjoying food at their own pace.

This is one of the reasons we enjoy offering bespoke catering. Every part of the menu can be considered in relation to the rest of the day, helping to create a natural flow from the first bite to the last.

Our wider wedding menus include everything from traditional three course dining and sharing roasts to Mediterranean grills, small bites and evening street food, so there is plenty of scope to create a dining experience that feels right for you.
